corporate governance beyond legal requirements

This article addresses the importance of effective corporate governance in the context of occupational health and occupational safety (OSH), exploring how responsible business management goes beyond compliance with legal requirements. Based on the concept and principles of corporate governance disseminated by the Brazilian Institute of Corporate Governance (IBGC), the text discusses the integration of the aspects of the safe and healthy work environment and the health of workers as foundations for the principles of Corporate Governance, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) standards and the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. Practical examples illustrate the incompatibility between supposedly effective corporate governance and the violation of OSH standards or the deliberate concealment of data on work-related diseases and accidents. The conclusion highlights the relevance of the “Safety and Health in Schools” project, promoted by the Public Ministry of Labor, in the formation of a culture of prevention.
